Dropped the needle = high idle

Forums

Well I finally got the throttle replaced and the cable fitted - with the Doherty twist grip I bought from the noc shop. Pattern part which need a fair bit of filing. Cable fits! Correct length.
Anyway, started on first kick having dropped the needle 1 notch lower (now 2nd notch from the top) but idle is waaaay too high and I can't slow it down. Will I need a different idle jet now?

It's becoming a chore... I just want to ride it!
Thanks

The idle is controlled by the idle screw which lifts (or not) the slide, this must work OR you have the slide hanging on the cable.

Hi Alan it seems to work when I screw it in it gets (even) faster.
The new cable has a very small amount of play so it's not too tight.
Is it wise to put the needle back to middle position on the clip to see if it returns to good tick over first?

Thanks for the pointers gents
The new cable by 1 mm wasn't seated correctly. It must have become dislodged when I refitted the slider.
Tickover restored.. Thanks for the pointers

As an aside the needle valve has little or no influence on tickover.
If you want to find out about carb' settings Amal have a pamphlet explaining the workings of their products.

Thanks I might need that!
Been out and it's running really well.
Until I sit at the traffic lights for a few seconds. It wants to stall when I pull away. Did once. Ticks over 100%.
I assume that's the pilot that may need richening a touch?

Check Amal instructions.  Which carburettor(s) do you have?  And single or twin carbs? Pilot can be hard to reach on monobloc left side

If the engine stops when you try to speed up slightly from idle, try enriching with the idle mixture screw.

That is, if the routine service items have been attended to.

i had a similar issue of cutting out on initial throttle opening . Richer settings no help , New carb no help. problem solved with a distributor overhaul and slack removed from advance /retard springs.

I've got electric ignition and didn't have the problem with it wanting to stall  before I changed the needle height so must be a setting.... You'd have thought anyway.
If I try to richen the pilot up and that doesn't work I'll have to revert back to original needle setting I guess or change the pilot jet to a size bigger.
I'll check it tho if if anything is obvious.
