The silencers on my 1959 99 apparently date back to the early eighties and I need to replace them. They have a protruding seam along the bottom and I have seen on the market replacement silencers like this but there are also very similar silencers available which are slightly smaller in girth and which have no seam.
I have no idea whether the silencers on the bike are the originals or some throwback pattern part.
Could someone please advise as to which type is correct for my model and year. Thanks.
Barry
PS when I approached a well known exhaust system manufacturer and retailer I was only offered the slimmer seamless type.
Good Morning Barry, There…

Hello Barry now asfar Has Norton twins Silencer go the Frist sets from September 1957 to the Smooth look were Seamless on the underside of the silencer and the originals were made in house At BracebridgeStreet Workshop by their skilled workforce. I have a left-hand side Original smooth looksilencer succumb 1958 All aftermarket silencers have been copies of copies and it was Armours Silencers that put in the seams on the unside has they did not have the right tooling and contracted the job out to a silencer manufacturer the end result was a seamed inside silencer and all Norton owners from then believedthis was the original ones, which was not the case, and No one has ever remade the Norton Manxman 650 silencers, this motorcycle had its own set . Now if you requirethe silencer I have you can buy it from me at a fair price, yours AnnajAttachments

Thank you Howard. I did do…
Thank you Howard. I did do my research before posting and had read the thread you referred to with interest. Unfortunately as a newcomer to all things Norton references to Peashooter, cigars, cheroots etc were essentially meaningless to me which is why I used the possibly too simplistic distinguishing feature of the seam or no seam. Also the models mentioned in the thread were 1960 or later ( slimline; there I have learned something) whereas my 1959 is a wideline. But is that material? Answer is I don't know and I'm no wiser.
Thanks again and to Anna and I am sorry if I have asked a question to which there is apparently no simple answer. When I am told by some knowledgeable stranger that my newly restored Dommie is sporting incorrect silencers I shall have my suitably rude reply ready.

Good Morning Barry, There is a good thread on different types of Dommie silencers raised by John Sunderland on 28 Nov 2016. Well worth a read (and images to consult) before you go much further - tho' it's best to ignore the stuff about Manxman ...... it may confuse the issue which of course, it is meant to do. Regards, Howard
