Hi Peter, the small plate fits inside the battery box and secures the battery box(on the base) to the mounting plate fitted on top of the engine plates, the battery then sits on top of this smaller plate - I usually put a piece of approx 1/8" thick rubber mat under the battery.
Regards Terry

A couple of photos to help. The oblong plate sits inside the box at the bottom. 2 bolts (5/16" cei I think) pass through the plate.... on through the box bottom and screw into the cross plate which mounts both the oil tank and battery box. This plate should have nuts welded to it to receive the ends of the bolts.
When all the bits are bolted together on the bike, it is a smart move to put a rubber mat inside to sit on top of the bolt heads.
