Dominator oil tank glitch

I removed the oil tank from my 1955 Model 88. Under the bottom, there are two bolt mounts through the oil tank platform, and another into the side of the tool tray. Oddly, mine has one bolt, and a stud with a nut. This made it extremely difficult to temove the tank. I ended up removing the platform to get it out. I want to remove that offending stud, have tried using two locked nuts without success. It refuses to come out. Any clues?

Hi Paul, I would cut off flush, center pop and drill down with a small dia bit to very close to the depth of the other hole then drill down with the correct size bit for the existing thread size ,Pick out the bits of remaing stud if possible and clean out thread with correct taps. This is not a structural part and does not need a perfect thread.

Get the nuts locked and spot weld them to the stud, heat nuts and stud to break any nut lock compound that may have been used then cool stud only with cold water, try straight away.

1955 parts list has 2 studs, part number 13033, priced at 6d each,for the bottom of the oil tank and a bolt 12342 for fixing the top, price 5d. The price may have gone up.

A classic example of Norton designing things without the slightest thought to serviceability. A pair of bolts at the bottom would make oil tank removal a three-bolt effort, and easy. Studs at the bottom meant a long struggle, and the removal of the oil tank platform (and battery if it's still in place)

i plan to go with bolts for lower mounting. If I have to, I will get a welder to zap some metal to the stud, and put it in a vice, then twist the oil tank. Exit stud, to the scrap bin....

A bolt does make sense as its a litle used part. Its just possible that the stud was specified to stop folk using a longer bolt than sensible.
