Dominator front mudguard problems. Length of stays.

Forums

Afternoon folks, hope you are all well.

Several topics about dominator mudguards fouling  the forks mention head bearings, twisted forks and several other things but none, that I can find , suggest the mudguard may just have been put on wrongly.

Perhaps the fork stays have been put on in the wrong place or are the wrong length. I believe the longer stays should go at the front of the fork and the shorter ones at the back. I remember it from the saying "the long and short of it".

Some one with more knowledge than I could perhaps tell the forum what are the lengths of the fork stays ; should anyone wish to check theirs or order one.

Ride safe , keep well.

Cheers Mick

Here's a photo of my stays which I believe are original along with the mudguard. The bike is a 1959 99 with the 7" forks.

Both stays measure the same length at approx 11 1/4" or 11 3/8" between bolt centres - bit difficult to measure accurately whilst fitted.

99 Front Mudguard and Stays

Many thanks to Bob and Robert for their replies.

Now may I apologise for suggesting the mudguard stays may be of different lengths; I believed this to be the case because my friend told me he had read an article by Stan Dibben saying the stays were different. It now turns out my friend did not read an article be Stan Dibben but an article in which Stan Dibben said he had never heard of the suggestion of differing lengths.

I should have checked my garage shelves before I believed him, and before I wrote my unhelpful piece ,  because I have got nine mudguard stays off a "99", a 650SS and ES2 or Model 50  and each are the same length. The chances of having them all the same length  should have alerted me.

Any way the Norton Owners Club has come up trumps again.

Sorry again,

Ride safe, Cheers Mick

It is called serendipity when we have an answer to a question or find something before it is lost (or the answer comes before the question).                                                                                             I have a wideline but the front mudguard stays are too long-they must be Commando and are 12 1/2" (or more) I was wondering what they should be now I know!

Alan.

I have clicked on a link from you but it does not seem to take me anywhere.

I have two stays you can have, they are both chromed but the chrome is not good on one and very bad on the other. They may clean up with a bit of work if you are going to paint them.

As they say "Free to a good home" but postage would be appreciated.

Nice front wheel picture by Bob, having the same tyre and the alloy wheel I now have something to aim for with my mudguard around the wheel/tyre. With help from Mick we might get there. Cheers both.

Hi Alan, just be aware that I have heard that several owners have not been able to fit the 90/90 tyre due to clearance issues on the mudguard stays.

I believe the standard rim on the Dommi is a WM2, whereas my rim is a WM1 - which gives a slightly narrower profile (1/4"?) to the tyre.  According to the Avon site, my rim is out of spec for this tyre but after several thousand miles, I can honestly say that the handling and steering has been faultless.
