I have an 8" dominator full width hub and on stripping down to replace bearings etc. I find that the thread where the locknut engages is almost completely worn away. Does anybody know of an engineering shop (preferably in the north west but will travel if needed) that can add some aluminium weld then machine and re-cut the thread.

Have you tried fitting a brand new lock ring? It may just have enough extra thread diameter to hold into the worn alloy. Don't do it up tight, there is no need as all the lock ring really seems to do is to hold in the felt seal, the chrome cover and wheel spindle hold the bearing in place.
