Dominator Electronic Ingnition Conversion

Forums

As a soon to be owner of a 1960 Dominator 99 I've been searching the internet for parts and suppliers etc. During my searches I've seenadvertisements for both Boyer Branson and Pazan electronic ignition conversion sets. This brings me to the obvious questions:

  1. Have any members fitted either/or make of electronic ignition system.
  2. How difficult a job are theyto install and set up.
  3. Is the cost and work worth the effort. I'm not a total buffoon when it comes down to these kind of jobs but I just don't fancy spending the money of doing the work if the cons outweigh the pros so to speak.

Any advise will be very much appreciated.

I presume you have a distributor. Ideally you should get a system that replaces the points . EI gives a much better spark and so better running all round. Its not cheap. I have gone for a cheaper points assist unit from boyer, pazon also make one. I have tried a Powerpark system which replaces the points with a magnetic trigger but could not get it to work with the 18d2 distributor, had no luck getting my money back either!. If your distributor is well worn a complete new system would be better. A strong spark will keep your plugs clean and make easy starting and good tickover. Timing the engine will need a strobe and some marks on the alternator if you lose the points.

I just bought a kit off Paul Goff for my 1964 Atlas/N15. I've not fitted it yet, but I have fitted Pazon units tothree 1968 model Royal Enfield Interceptors & one Mk2a Commando.Never looked back. Infinitely better than points or a magneto. They are easier to time up, as the wasted spark system makes either cylinder on either stroke available for timing. No more "find the compression stroke on the correct pot" to worry about. No fiddly points. No bother with getting the mag sprocket bang on for timing mags. I'm not on commission for Pazon, but they do seem very good.
