Dollshead, Upright and Laydown gearbox component

Forums

Please, can anyone help me in finding a source for the hardened steel washer that fits into the rear of the sleeve gear to retain the roller bearings in all the above gearboxes. This was part number 3598 becoming A2/319 post war.

I am desperate for one to complete the rebuild of a Dollshead box in which the original had disintegrated, also one need to replace a badly worn one in a spare Laydown box that I have. New bronze thrust washers and replacement rollers are readily available but nobody seems to stock this essential hardened steel washer. A search through a dealer's box of scrap sleeve gears found three but all with missing retaining washers.

Considering it seems to be such a high wear item, and given the relative simplicity of design and the number of gearboxes that it is needed for, it would seem a very eligible candidate to have made and stocked by the NOC spares scheme.

Norvil have this washer, part number 023190. I installed one in the Dolls head box in my 500T.

Pete; I have just stripped my Dollshead box to deal with excessive end float preventing good clutch take up. I note the steel washer you refer to which is flush with the face of the gear. The thrust washer is down. 5/64" from 1/4" and the pen washer over the cover bearing has started to take load. My question is did you determine the "new" thickness of the roller retainer plate and did you make any spare? I don't want to fit the thrust and deal with only half the issue.

Cheers

Jon,

I started to cut a few square blanks from 2mm gauge plate and got as far asboring the centre holes when Andy Barwick above kindly pointed me in the direction of Norvil. They have these hidden at the end of their page listing components for "Gearbox - Post-1957" !!

Norvil part number 023190: WASHER - RETAINING - SLEEVE GEAR ROLLERS ******, £16.80 + VAT

At that point I promptly bought one and packed up attempts atmaking them as anywayI wasn't too confident about any DIY attempt to achieve the correct degree of hardness.

There are three small dimples on the face of the retaining washer which should give an indication of wear but if you are interested there are dimensional drawings on Rob van den Brink's excellent WD Norton site.

To repeat what I said at the start, considering these washers were an essential part of every Norton gearbox built for probably a couple of decades, and the factthey seem to be missing or knackered on most sleeve gears found, they would seem a prime candidate to be manufactured for the NOC Spares service.

Hope the above helps.

Hello

Another option, that will upgrade the gearbox so that this issue never happens again, is to use this kit from Ken McIntosh.

I have used this on 4 gearboxs now with excellant results.
