Distributor to electronic ignition?

Forums

Hi

I have a distributor 99 slimline Dommie that I am sorting. However I no longer have any spares for the distributor. I gave them away at the club many years before I obtainedthis bike. I have plenty of Lucus Rita & Boyer spares. Can I update to electronic ignition without having machining work done on the distributor?I have found an electronig ignition pick up on e bay,However it states it is for negative earth? All my bikes are posative earth & I dont intend to change this one iether.

I have a Boyer electronic ignition on my 1960 slimline and on my 650 too. They work very well. It is a straight conversion for the distributor or the Magneto. I bought mine from RGM.

I recommend a Boyer power box too. Flat battery / duff battery or blown fuse, the power box will get you going.

The full Boyer conversion is not cheap (if thats what you are looking for) and will mean that you will have to strobe the ignition , If the dissy is working a cheap (£50) points assist unit will improve things and allow fag paper timing method , if it fails on the road you can go back to the old system to get you home( not something a full conversion will allow). The dissy can be refurbed by a specialist and are fairly reliable unless you are breathing too much oil through it.

You can buy the same unit on ebay for + earth machines but it costs a couple of quid more at £41.80. It's advertised for the Triumph 3TA but it's the same unit for the 18D2 distributor.

I fitted one to my Dommi and 4500 mile later it's never missed a beat. You'll need to set up timing marks on the alternator stator/rotor, but that's the same for any form of electronic ignition.

This is what I have used on my Matchless (about 20 years) and BSA (recent) singles. Takes the power off the points so that they last for a very long time and, as noted above, can be timed statically (no need for actually using thefag paper as they have a LED, just that method)..

Last one bought from Greystones Motorcycles.

If you are thinking of the Accuspark (or similar) make sure you get a written agreement to re-fund if not happy with it. I have had a bad experience with them .

Hi all

Thank you for the reply. A Boyer is going to be fitted as I have one. Jim thanks for the advice, that is the one I was looking at.

Good stuff

Chris
