crankcase markings

Forums

As I understand it, crankcase halves were machined as pairs and that they are marked as such by some means.

I have a pair of 1966 650SS crankcase halves and am struggling to finds a pair of markings - presumably each half of a pair should bear the same mark?

I assume that this will be some form of stamp or engraving - was there a common format (eg always alpha or numeric characters) and always in a similar location?

Stamped on the bottom but can wander, a 3 digit number on each case which should match, the numbers are small and not the same size as the engine numbers.

A couple of photos to show the pairing numbers. A few points worth a mention. In most cases (pun!) the stamped numbers will be facing you from the timing side. So one number is generally on the inside of the Drive Side Case and the other on the outside of the Timing Side.

On later cases quite often the numbers were bashed inside both cases.

The very early Model 7 and Dominator engines were produced in such huge quantities that the case pairing number went into 4 digits or a letter plus 3 digits.

The attachments should support the blurb above.

Thanks John/Phil for such prompt responses.

I have had a look but can only see a single digit (2) on the inside of both halves (see pictures). There is also a less distinct digit (looks like a 4) close by but this appears to have been made with a different sized stamp!

I have another timing side case (with no drive half) and this has a number (187) clearly stamped on the inside.

I would suggest that you have a pair of cases that were number 2 off the batch production line.
