Crank case oil breather pipe 16h

Forums

I’m rebuilding a 1940 WD 16h and looking for advice on where to route the oil pipe which comes off the primary drive side, crank case breather pipe.  When I dismantled the bike I seem to remember that it went back into the oil tank to the breather tube which rises above oil level in the tank.

is this usual and correct? Would the breather not pressurise the oil tank or worse still cause pressure to build up in the crank case.

I’ve attached a photo of how I think it should be connected, would appreciate any information on the best way to connect it, thanks.

Both of these should vent to atmosphere. They have a similar form in that they are a length of plated 1/4" tube with a 5/15" flared-end soldered over the last length. In the case of the engine breather, it curves up and over, possibly in the general direction of the rear chain. The oil tank breather is short and points straight downwards...I've never known oil to emit from the latter.  The illustration on page 33 and the lubrication diagram on page 8 of the M&I Manual show the tank breather clearly.

There is a ball in the brass union, David...no spring though. It can blow but not suck.
