Crank balancing

Forums

I have the engine to my Navigator completely stripped. Before I put it back together should I have the crank balanced? I have been told that it’s not worth it on a 350. However it was clear he didn’t want to do it. I would hate to build the engine and find I should have done it? Any views as I would like to get a balanced opinion (excuse the pun).

Hi,

If you are fitting new pistons and their weight complete with pin and rings is substantially different to the originals, then maybe. If you are reusing original pistons,  or ones where the weight is close to original,  then probably not worth it.

If you decide to rebalance, then the same observation I made on the Commando forum apply - only use someone who is familiar with British bike cranks or you could make things worse.

I'm sure that you will get some good responses soon from lightweight owners as to what they feel you should do.

Hope this helps,

George.
