Combat oil return - or not

Forums

I'm not particularly adept at things mechanical, but I do read and operate logical thought.

Smewhere, and I cant remember where, I read that the spectacular failure of a number of these engines was not due to poor bearings but an oil return problem at much above 4K revs.

If this IS true: is the oil feed/return on Combats different to other Commando engines or didn't the 'ordinary' Commando owners rev their machines or is the information wrong?

I own one and cruise at 4K and although it doesn't do great mileages at one time; I am curious.

The Combat is slightly different and the oil pick up is poorly positioned. If you search on the net you'll find plenty of suggestions on ways to improve it. However, my Combat has never had any modification to the oil pick up and has never exhibited any problem with oil return. In it's 43 year life it has had many long trips at sustained speed without drama.

If you had the engine apart it's worth thinking about but I wouldn't be taking a working bike apart to do anything. As they say, if it isn't broken don't try and fix it.

From what I understand, it was a number of German owners who had the majority of failures. They were traveling at speeds that you just cannot maintain legally in the UK. Your 4k equates to about 70. They would have been revving considerably higher.

As Ian says, if it ain't broke don't fix it but do not cruise at 6k !
