Clutch/gearbox/oil seal issues

My 961 was sent to the factory mid november at the time of Sean and Touches departure to rectify for the THIRD time oil coming from the cable gland on top of the primary chain case.Eventually was told that I needed new cluch basket and gear selector .The gears were stiff and was given a price to rectify ,and included a re map of engine management. However somewhat dissappointed that as the bike ,although 3 years old it had only done 3500 miles.

Is this oil seepage from this gland common and is the cause faulty rubber as has been suggested by Norton Scottish agent?

Hi Iain,

I had the same problem as you with the selector mechanism but mine also took out the selector drum and selectors in the gearbox and that all happened at 3000 miles.Norton fixed the problem and the gearbox is now nice and slick. On the clutch side mine is a bit snatchy so i had a look at it whilst my starter motor was with Norton for the bearing upgrade and i think a new set of springs will cure my problem as when pulling in the clutch the plates did not separate evenly. The rubber gasket on top of the primary chaincase for the alternator wires can split as mine did but it has never leaked, get a new one put a little clear gasket cement in and round it and you will not have any problems.I would also keep an eye on the regulator rectifier as the early bikes had a few problems with these as i did, mine went awol and fried the battery, so scroll to voltage output and check it is no higher than 15 volts. When you get it sorted it is worth the grin factor.

Iain, I had oil "gushing" past the gland on the primary drive case.

I was told it was manufactured from the wrong material. It had started to break up.

Replaced with correct material and no further problems.

I hope you get it sorted.

Thanks for the tip regarding clear gasket cement,I assume that high temp silicon gasket sealer would do the job.Due to adverse weather in this part of Scotland have not been able to take the bike for a run to test all the repairs but hopefully I will get a weather window this week to get out and about.

With regard to charging voltage due to having problems with a duff battery when my bike was delivered new I do tend to run with the clock readout on voltage ,usually showing about 14.3v
