Clutch operating arm - is this correct?

Forums

Hi. I tried setting up the clutch on my Dommie 99 project but I’m not sure about the way the operating arm is positioned (outer gearbox cover), so I’d appreciate some help. The two photos below show the operating arm - one photo is with the clutch operated and the other one is with the clutch unoperated (‘normal’). The clutch operating arm has a curved cutout that to me looks like it should ride on the roller that is fitted in the slot in the clutch operating body. On my clutch, the operating lever never really rides on the roller even when the clutch is released. Is that the way it’s supposed to be or have I got the wrong lever? If it looks ok, what is the purpose of that roller as it doesn’t seem to do anything. The clutch push rod is new and the big ball bearing is fitted inside the clutch operating body.

The clutch operates but it’s a bit ‘creaky’. The cable is new and runs freely when not connected.

Thanks very much.

Hi Tony,

the pictures appear to be OK by me. When the clutch lever is released the cutout in the arm should be more or less concentric with the roller but with no pressure on it otherwise there will not be any free play at the handlebar.

When the lever is operated the heel of the arm rides around the roller pushing the ball and push rod thus releasing the clutch.

The photos don’t show if the cable is in line with the arm but they do look very near.

Make sure that the handlebar lever end aligns with the cable correctly and that the pivot pin is nice and round. Apply some grease and all should be fine.

The lever should be resting snugly on the roller when at rest. Sixteenth inch play in cable adjusted by hex nut in clutch pressure plate

Thanks guys. I think that David has possibly identified the problem - I backed out the threaded plug in the clutch pressure plate a bit to much as I had around 3/16 free play in the clutch  push rod. Now I’ve adjusted the free play to 1/16, as advised, things look a lot more ‘reasonable’. No new cable yet so can’t try it but am hopeful!

Thanks again.
