Clutch cable length

Forums
Hi Guys - my '55 ES2 is fitted with a GB8 gearbox rather than a 102 ie the box is off a Dommie 88 or 99. It is therefore fitted with a "tower" where the clutch cable enters. So is the standard ES2 clutch cable (A2/265) the correct length? I ask because I seem to have to take up a lot of slack after I've adjusted the worm lever.Cheers, George

I had a similar issue with my 99 AMC box, could not decide the best position for the operating lever. Its position can be varied by the position of the clutch center screw and the temptation is to set it to work with the cable length you have, there is however the correct position to get the best leverage to the ball and the cable adjustment should be secondary ,resolder if neccessry to correct this.

Just to add to my earlier post - so much slack that the adjuster is almost screwed out of the gearbox casing. I've had to add a split nut between the outer case of the cable and the adjuster to compensate. George

Hi George,

If you don't want to move the nipple on the inner cable yourself (as per Robert's suggestion) there are a couple of other options for you: 1) Would the standard Dominator clutch cable for laydown box models fit? This might work if the same handlebar clutch lever was used on both ES2 & Dommie 2) Carrot Cycles offer a custom cable making service. If you send them your cable as a pattern and the distance you need to move the nipple they will either modify your existing cable or make up a new one (or do both and have a spare).

I think my crude insertion of a nut has the same effect as re-soldering, Robert, but I'm still interested to know the correct length - and, indeed, how to measure it! BTW - dI don't trust my soldering! George

I use Bakers fluid ,stick solder and a deep spoon which i heat over the gas to make a sort of solder pot , with this i can control the area the solder gets to . Only when the wife is out though ,otherwise all control is lost!.

I think that you mentioned visiting Redruth in a previous post. Take your old cable in to MY motors and ask Ross to make one of the correct length for you.

Your note popped up a bit late Ian. The levers on the bike are retro fitted as the clutch lever is fitted with an adjuster which the original was not. Thanks for the nod to Carrot Cycles. Might try the spoon method, Robert, albeit with a propane gun as the kitchen is all electric. I think a practice run on some old cable is indicated.
