The latest top tip for Norton owners in the States that have fitted Jim Schmidt's long conrods and short pistons, is carbide impregnating the bore. There are some pretty impressive claims made for longevity of bore and with barrels becoming expensive it could be worth a punt. Any thoughts? Laystall do it and they have a pretty good historical track record when it comes to engine prep.

The reason for the recommendation is increased bore wear on fitment of the long rods and short pistons, so its not really needed for normal rods and pistons but will increase bore life. What it does to the rings is not mentioned but as you already get several sets of rings wearing out per bore on untreated Nortons then it might go either way.

I've just emailed Laystall engineering in Wolverhampton to find out the cost. I suspect the tipping of short pistons in our engines is the problem that our American cousins are finding. It may be a process that can deliver even more life to our ageing machines and if it prevents another strip down, rebore, re-ring, new pistons etc it might be money well spent

I rather thought that Norton's were excellent as far as bore wear was concerned. I could be wrong but I do have three Norton's still on standard bore and one of them is a Commando.
Could still be useful if wear is a problem and interesting to find out how the ring bedding in process is affected.
