Capping the oiler

Anyone permanently capped the oiler on a Commando Mk2a ? Recently bought a mint Mk2a with a poorly plugged oiler which left the battery area etc coated in oily mist. I don't fancy reinstating the oiler and want to cap it permanently and before I install an 11mm compression end cap has anyone had success with another method?

I have a Mk2 and capped the chain oiler by a similar way to that shown in your second picture. I used a well fitting bolt with the threaded part cut off. I wonder if yours uses a set-screw and the oil is passing along the thread?

Thanks Richard, I thought of maybe threading the pipe but was worried any bur may hide in the tank and get into the motor. The old cap in the photo, was simply a Flexi pipe cut short and a piece of rod inside fastened with a jubilee clip. I just want to permanently cap it with the least risk as the oiler pipe is difficult to reach once installed. So I take your method is leak free ?

Dear Paul,

Have also threaded one and added bolt will smear of wellseal, suspect locktite would be an alternative. Have also in the  more distant past squashed end of pipe in vice and brazed along, but I was also brazing up cracks around captive nut underneath tank f

rom which lots of oil escaped when hot.

Either method remember to swill out tank with paraffin while it is off, don't  be surprised if you stir up bottom and find half an inch of sludge in there. Because it is a pain to remove tank it is rarely cleaned on changing oil.

To make tank removal easier swap that bottom bolt for a stud with about half an inch protruding, dont bother with a nut, stud only locates in a grommet.

Happy spannering

Many thanks Martin did you thread the inside or outside of the pipe ? I have been thinking more about this method but not sure as the wall thickness isn't that great to take a decent thread !

All good stud and thanks about the heads up on the using a stud

Cheers

Yes it is leak free, it was a well fitting bolt but I think that I smeared Blue Hylomar on it. May have used pipe clips rather than jubilee clips.

Hi Paul, I have tapped the pipe out 1/8 th BSP and fitted a plug using pipe sealant.
