Atlas clutch on Commando g/box

Forums

Is there a problem with putting a Commando gearbox in my Atlas? I think I will need a spacer between the engine plate and top mounting boss and the cable leverage/travel is different but those things are fixable.

If you visit RGM's website and view their gearbox mainshaft you will see four different types for the AMC box.

I know the Commando clutch locates against a circlip, and has a grooved mainshaft, but it's a long time since I had the Atlas lump, so can't remember how that located, but would suggest that might be an area to investigate, too.

Yes, but you will need to swap out the mainshaft.

The mainshaft got progressively longer as the years rolled by.

There is no reason why you can't fit the mainshaft from your dommie box to the commando box.

It's actually a pretty easy job (I did it the other way round, as my project bike will be running a commando engine and clutch)

Well then, the logical next step is to just choose the best bits from both boxes and use the dommie mainshaft.

Plan C for the Commando Box.

Fit the Commando Box.....keeping its mainshaft. You should then be able to convert the primary drive to a belt version with no serious mods required. You then get the bonuses of non-dripping cases and a lighter clutch action. Plus....the Commando Box has the AMC 2 gear clusters which will suit an Atlas. No real need to 'mix and match'.

Depending on the date of your Commando box, it may be an AMC3 with the slightly higher 2nd gear.

Quite correct Paul......I had forgotten about the early 850 bikes with R/H gear change.

Attached table shows choice of internals.

I can't really imagine a life without a dripping primary but now I am seriously considering it.
