Are your barrels at Laystall Engineering?

I have dropped my barrel off at Laystall Engineering today and when talking with Dave Kelly about having the bores Silicon Carbide impregnated he told me he has another set of Norton barrels that have been there for a few weeks. Unfortunately he cannot find the phone number of the person they belong to so is waiting for the owner to contact him. So if they are your barrels then get in touch with him but please make sure you pick up your barrels not mine :)

Hello Karl
What kind of money are we talking about here?

Dave kelly says sbout £30 plus VAT per bore (good news if you have a single)

I reasoned that as i have just had a rebore new pistons and full crank ballancing to match the pistons etc. that if this extented the life of the bores it would be worth while. After all we spend more than that over the life of an engine buying the more expensive brands of oil or petrol and all the other additives to improve the performance an life span of the engine then £70 was cheap.

It is said you get 2 sets of piston rings to the life of a bore so if i get say 3 sets of rings then it will be worth it, of course time will tell but after the money i have just spent £70 is not a large amount extra.

Just to let you all know I have picked up my barrels today from Laystall they charged £72 for the bores to be impregnated with Silicon Carbide. The process took just one day as I dropped the barrels off just before they closed on Friday and they rang me Tuesday morning to say they were ready (then Christmas got in the way).

The bores are now an even mat light grey colour and feel smooth if you run your finger over them. The honing marks have gone but when measured (though only with a vernier) the bores seem to be the same size as before. Dave Kelly did say they had done a few Norton barrels including one made of alloy with iron liners (Dunstall maybe?) and was happy to do more.

Time will tell if the process lives up to the claims made for it but if you are thinking about having it done I can recommend you get in touch with Laystall Engineering of Wolverhampton and ask for Dave Kelly or look up their website on Google and email him on their contact page.

I thought the whole idea of honing was to smooth out the tooling marks and prepare the surface for oil retention. As I remember 30 - 45degrees cross hatch. I guess we are lucky we have the spray bar....
