Alternative Engine

Does anyone know if a Norton Dominator 99 (late 1950s) engine and transmission can or will fit in an older Norton frame, like a 1947 ES2?

Alexander,

It will not be an easy modification.  The single downtube swinging arm frames from the early 1950's were used for the twin Model 7 and the single ES2, but the engine plates and mounting lugs are quite different on the twin.

Therefore your 1947 ES2 frame will need the front lower frame lug changing, which will probably mean taking the frame to pieces.  I can provide a photo of a Model 7 frame if you think you want to have a go.

Hi Alexander,

Anything is possible but not easy, and the main problem with a 1947 ES2 frame will be the up-right gearbox top mounting lug and saddle down tube lugs that attach the rear engine plates. The easiest plunger ES2 frame would be the 1950 to 1952 type that takes the laydown gearbox and has the 4 bolt lugs on the saddle down tube. It would be a shame to cut an original 1947 frame if you don't need to. You will need to make all new engine plates from scratch as not many people do this conversion !!  Make sure things such as the primary chain-case, foot-rests etc fit O.K.

Thanks for the insight and advise guys, I suspected as much. No worries, I'm not willing to hack up a beautiful frame just to modify an engine fit. Back on the lookout for a rebuilt engine to fit on an old ES2. Not easy to come by these days.
