Alloy clutch

Forums

I noticed that Burton Bike Bits is selling an Alloy clutch for the pre-commando twins, for a whole lot of money. I'm just curious why would anyone spring for that? Just for a little weight saving? For racing?......

I believe that these were available in the late 60s early 70s. About 15 years ago, I came across a set fitted to a 1968 Atlas that had been re-imported. Both Driver and Driven plates were quite thin allowing extra plates inside the basket. More plates, more grip, more drive. Presumably a small saving in weight. I also think that, at the time, these plate sets were imported from the US.

Those alloy clutch plates were made by a company in America called Barnett. who also made control cables.I bought three larges boxes of clutch parts from America a few years back, and there was allot of those plain and fibre plates included in the sale. Allot of my bikes when imported from North America had those clutch plates fitted and the OEM steel ones replaced with these alloy ones. They are really good clutch plates and work really well.

Hi Anthony...........I read about your Unified Twin Number 2 rebuildin the latest Real Classic mags while waiting for my 961 to have the oil pump and breather mods fitted to my 961 today. Interesting carb manifold!!!

Those Barnet plate sets had me wondering about what happens when they get hot. Bearing in mind that alloy can expand considerably when heated. Slow riding in heavy traffic must get quite tricky once those plates heat up and the cable adjustment becomes super-slack.

The second U/T is expected back soon, as I really want it for the next Kempton Park classic show, but I may not be able to get it back in time. You can then come over and ride it, when it has been returned. I have not heard any thing bad about that Barnett clutch plates as they have been used for a very long time in America, and every P11 or N15 that I have imported has had them fit, to replace the OEM steel ones.
