Adjusting valve lash Model 50

Forums

Hi all, just replaced the head gasket on my 1963 Model 50 and have searched this site and read the downloaded manual I have. Got the specs...

.003 inlet and .006exh cold. No problem.

Problem is where/how do you measure this? The accessible end of the rocker (after pulling cover) has a ball and socket kind fitting. No feeler gauge will work in there? The actual valve stem/rocker is buried deep within. What's the secret guys? I', guessing something to do with each "land" of the adjuster nuts being "X" thou?

Really appreciate some advise here. Set by feel, erred on the loose side. Runs fine, prefer to do it right...

Hi Clive,

I don't know which manual you refer to, but the clearance on a M 50 is zero on both valves, 'Push rods free to rotate without up and down movement with piston on compression stroke' ..............it is the same for an ES2. I think that is why the engine is always so quite!

(On my 1960 slimline M50 i try and give it about 1 thou clearance on both valves)

Well that explains it.. The book I referenced.....

Maintenance Manual and Instruction Book for the Unapproachable Norton.

Models. No. 50, ES2, 88,99,650 Sports Specials, 750 Atlas and 750 ScramblerPublication P106/p

Has instructions as to the procedure to set them, has specs for the other models but no listing of specs for the Model 50? I then went to the google god and found a couple threads that both said .003 and .006. ?

The cylinder on a Model 50 (and other singles) will grow in length as it gets warm.

As it grows in length, in relation to the pushrods, the clearances will open up.

I set my valve clearance when cold to be just free to rotate easily. Too tight and you can lose compression at starting. Too loose and the valves will clatter when warm.
