88 layshaft bearing

Had one go in my Commando too but no wheel lock, the failure seems to be related to the taller gearing of the 850 combined with a made in Portugal bearing and the cage distorts and fails from the twisting of the layshaft from the torque applied, the balls all then migrate to one side and fall out. This is much less likely to happen in an 88 but I would still look inside to check the bearing and then you may as well replace it, a wheel lock up is not nice.

I had one fail on my 99 at about 150,000 miles. Symptom was kickstart descending on its own. Not a common problem on 88/99 but if the box is out you could change it. Not too difficult.

If you change to a roller you will have to shim the layshaft as there will be lots of slack. Isos shims which need to be openned up in the bore have to be fiddled in at the K.start end . I did it a bit different and shimmed both ends. Much easier to fit the better ball race as recommended by Hemmings.He does not like the roller or shims.

The 88/99 Dominators don't need a roller bearing. The better quality ball, as mentioned by Robert is fine. And simpler to fit.

hello bearing fitted to the model88 were Of Ransom and Marles Make and they made the finest bearing you could lay your hands on and there still availableif you know where to look and it will be no good trying Mick Hemmings or Norvil Or AndoverNorton Or RgmMotors They will not have them in stock yours anna j
