55 ES2 chaincase

Forums

I would grateful for a little guidance on how the chaincase oil is kept in at the gearbox . I have the gasket in place at the crankcase and the footrestfelts on the footrest gland but cannot fathom where or how the felt fits which is shown in the parts list on the gearbox /clutch end.

Alan,

There is no felt or seal for the gearbox shaft, but there should be a large metal double washer which forms a sandwich over the rear clutch case. This "sandwich" washer then slides back a forth when the gearbox is moved to adjust the primary chain. I hope this description is clear.

As Phillip says there is a sliding metal washer but it doesn't seal by any means. I made my own felt washer to fit over the gearbox shaft behind the clutch to work as an oil seal.

Thanks Phillip for your help. Your description is clear and it looks like some oil loss is inevitable !. Thanks again, Alan

Hullo Ian ,Thanks for your input. Can I just ask if your felt seal stopped any leakage. Thanks, Alan
