1946 Model 18 rear chain adjustment

Forums

Hello,

i am working on my 1946 Model 18 with a rigid frame and dollâs head gearbox. I have looked everywhere and not been able to find the specifications for the correct play in the drive chain. Any advice would be appreciated.

A good guess is the same as a WD16H or Big4. Manuals says:

Front chain 3/8" whip. Rear chain 1/2" whip.

At the tightest point. And I would make several checks on the primary chain during the first few runs and again if any unusual roughness or vibration is felt through the footrests. Its very common for the box to pull back under the greater forces of the rear chain.

If you make the final adjustment of the primary by pushing the box forward with the adjuster (ie overtighten slightly then adjust correctly) this reduces the chance of it overtightening in use as you take up all the slack in the mountings and adjuster.

Thanks to all who replied. I will follow the suggestions and check after a few miles and a few rides.
