16H tyres

Forums

Hi all

Can anybody tell me if they have fitted K70's back and front on a 16H?

I've been advised not to by my local tyre guy. He says put a ribbed on the front and not a K70.

Cheers

Hi.

Seems to be a mattter of personal choice. Some people like 'em, I think they're bloody horrendous and would ( on a 16H) go for an Avon SM rear and an Avon (ribbed) Speedmaster on the front. www.vintagetyres.com/ do them at a good price.

Regards,

Ian.

I suppose K70s are OK if you don't mind the lack of grip and high wear rate. I don't rate them and echo Ian's comments.

Hi Stuart,

As long as it's pre 1945 and has 19" rimsyou can get away with Dunlop Uni-Grip (only made in 19" and in 325 and 350 widths) which are an Indian copy of the old Universal. I must point out though that they are not an official import by Dunlop and so are something you MIGHT find at a show but not normally an official tyre supplier, they are a grey import as such.

They are for pre 1945 technicallybecause a "Dot" mark is not needed for vehicles this age.

Thanks a lot you guys.

I'll take your advice and steer clear of the K70's. A ribbed Avon on the front and an Avon on the back will do me. I would hate to spoil the fun I'm having at the moment riding her. I'm having more fun riding now than I've had for years.

Many many thanks and I hope you're all enjoying the fine weather as much as I am.

Hi you guys again.

Its great having so much knowledge available here. I hope you don't mind a bit more advice. I am looking at the Avon SM rear at Vintage Tyres and they have a 3.50 x 19. Would that be ok on my 1941 WD? bike as it has a 3.25 x 19 on now.

Thanks again

I have the Indian Dunlop Uni-Grips on my WD16H (in 3.25x19) and they're fine. Probably not the tyres for racing in the wet but I don't do that anyway.

3.50 tyres will fit but they're not necessary although may wear less if heavily loaded.

If you're bike is in WD trim then something a little more dual purpose than a ribbed front will look more the part. Dunlop K70s are widely used in the WD world and, as per Avons Skidmasters, have improved modern compounds.

The 'Ensign' road tyre marketed by Vintage Tyres have a good name too.

The War Department's preference was for a 'Universal' on the front and a 'Comp' (trials) tyre on the rear as it gave the best dual purpose grip but reasons of economy led to the fitment of universal block tyres front and rear.

Any of these universal tyres will be adequate for bend-swinging at 55mph and probably better than a ribbed if you enjoy winter rides on muddy lanes as well.

Have a look at the Anita's tyres- they have ribbed and blocked patterns to fit. They are excellent value and I have been very pleased with mine. The ribbed front is a much better section than Avon.
