Gearbox cracked - weld or replace?

Forums

Hello,

Reparing a 1945 ES2 gearbox, a bronze? case and after giving it a good clean up I see a pretty long crack a long the iner cover.

Here is a photo.

Wonder if this is still ok to use, or should I weld or replace completely.

Marked the crack with a blue marker... dots....

Any coments are welcomed.

Cheers,

Paul

That's a shame Paul, I certainly wouldn't put it back on the bike like that and I'd get it welded and machined if possible. The problem is the heat can warp the case, also finding someone good enough to do it. It would be great if you can find a replacement but they're getting scarce

Thank you Dave. Yes, it's a shame.

Wondering what caused it. Maybe some bad gears specially 2nd and 3rd that had some welded tooths! didn't help causing extra vibration.

Or, too much stress at the kickstart shaft?

I will start looking for the replacement.

Cheers,

Ah, if it's had something hard go between the teeth it will try to push the cogs apart and the weakest part will give. It was obviously hard enough to break teeth and unfortunately crack the casing. I would replace the broken gears too. You may find the case will work ok under normal use, until you find a replacement, if you can't get it repaired.

Hi Paul, a local guy I deal with has a large crate full of doll's head and laydown ES2 transmission parts. My bet is there are probably one or two covers available. No idea what he would charge but he has always been reasonable with me. probably cheaper than getting yours repaired and shipping to the UK provided it is the basic parcel post from Toronto is relatively cheap though takes several weeks.

If you don't find one locally, let me know and I'll see if I can locate one with him.

Regards, Grant MacNeill, Toronto.

Yes, the crack seems to be in a critacle part of the case, at the bearing, clutch adjuster and kickstart shaft.

I have found some local covers, used, withought cracks but in a very bad state. Will keep on looking.

No dought the gears were in a bad shape. I have bought some from the NOCshop to replace them.

Pluse, check out this gearbox adjuster. For sure a weak point on the gearboxes specialy when these bad replacements are installed.

A loose gearbox is a also a big cause of problems.

Hello Grant,

If you happen to contact him I would be very grateful to see if he would have one and how much it would cost.

Thank you very much. Appreciate your help.

The one on ebay also has a crack but not as serious.

Paul I have sent you a private message on this NOC site, about one for sale, you haven't replied so I'm guessing you didn't see my message.

Hello Paul, I am back from vacation and checked today and he has a dolls head front plate, no cracks for $50 Canadian. I mail lots of guitar related gear to the UK and my guess is $20 or so for postage.

So no cracks, no fuss and no muss. I am supposed to make the trek in the next 15 days or so down to his "lair" so I could get it then. He has a bunch of parts for me and an ES2 plunger frame for me to pick up for a buddy.

if you are interested, just to be sure, please send me a front photo of the plate and I'll forward that to him to make sure we are on the same page. But he really knows old Nortons well . Also give me your mailing address...just the postal code would do it so I can verify postage cost.Everything would be at cost...happy to help; I'm in the guitar business...not bikes (grin)

email me at the shop if you wish to proceed: Grant MacNeill, The Twelfth Fret Guitar Shop, Toronto.
