Electra - batteries

Forums

Grateful for advice regarding the best suppliers of suitable batteries for an Electra, ie 2x 6V with the correct dimensions. Many thanks.

David,

I bought Powerline 6N6-3B gel batteries from the internet. They're 6Ah capacity. I forget the amperage rating but I think it is 30A. They've not been tested yet because my bike has been waiting for a critical part for 7 months now.

David, many thanks for your reply. Before going down this route did you consider trying to find one 12v battery that would do the job (although not authentic of course).

David

ps what part are you waiting for?

( at present the only part I’m missing is a kick start lever which I understand are hard to come by....)

David,

As I said in my article in the December Roadholder, my Electra was fitted with a 12V batter when I got it, but well-undersized in terms of capacity and connectors. It didn't really fit properly either in the battery box. I doubt there is a suitable 12V battery so I didn't look for one

I'm waiting for my rear sprocket to me re-made on my rear brake. Last month I was told it was on the gear cutter but nothing has arrived yet.

If you do a search for "Batteries" on NOC's Search you'll find what I suggested as the best power 6 volt battery.  It's basically a Yuasa - a B38-6A which is 14Ah at the 10 hour rate.  It's the most powerful traditional lead-acid battery I could find that size. (119mm x 83mm x 161mm)  I don't know the size of Electra's battery box so it may not be of use to you.

For an electric start you want the highest Amp-hour power you can get and putting 2 x 6Volt batteries in series still only gives you the same power as a single battery.  Some suppliers send them with acid, some don't so you'll have to check that.

I just did a quick check on eBay and found this at £35.95 inc. post.

I know you said that it's easier to fit 2 x 6V batteries but here's a Powerline 12 V which is 12Ah - 170 Amps cranking, which is good.  The more amps the better for starting!

You'll see that this one is 151mm x 86mm x 131mm.   Much cheaper too - if it can fit!  Only £30.95 inc.post.

Thanks for all the suggestions - the 2x 6V 13Ah option looks best re dimensions and matches with the spec in the manual (12Ah). The next issue, is does anyone know who fills such batteries with acid as no-one can deliver them with acid due to the latest regs. My phone calls this morning have all come up blank, even from battery suppliers. The only option would appear to travel a considerable distance to pick up filled ones which in the current climate isn't on. I live near Winchester/Southamption.

AGM batteries are deliverable.  Better by design too. Getting 6v ones that aren't alarm  batteries may be an issue though.

I know you have decided on what you want, but short of calling your local bike shop or kwik-fit to see if they would be able to fill it for you without supplying it, you may be stuck.

Or you could see if the likes of Halfords have what you want and do a 'click and  collect'?

Good Luck,

After messing about with acid in the past I bought gel batteries to avoid that. They came through the post.

I have to say that 6 or 7Ah sounds puny for an electric start, which is why I recommend the B38-6A.  It is not true that batteries can't be couriered with acid.  I mostly buy car batteries and they are gigantic - complete with acid!  With a quick search on eBay I found this:

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/JMT-Standard-High-Power-B38-6A-Triumph-T90-350-1962-1968/293614194665?hash=item445cc50fe9:g:KegAAOSw0o9e52fY

They say at the bottom of their advert - "This starter battery contains screws, vent hose and acid pack in an appropriate amount for the initial filling."

It's a shame that the 12V doesn't fit as it's much cheaper than 2 x 6Volts.

The last battery I bought for my Navigator came with the acid in a separate container.  I'm in Southampton by the way.

All, many thanks for the replies and helpful suggestions. Think it’s now sorted with Tayna Batteries able to supply and deliver a range of 6V batteries acid filled. Their reviews are very positive.
