Hi, I am currently putting a 1949 Inter back together and have all the parts for the forks. The forks are long roadholder with the springs on the outside. There is a leather washer that goes at the top of the springs, but it has three small holes which suggests it should be screwed to the fork shrouds at the bottom of the fork yokes. Is this the case, or should the washer go between the shrouds and the steel washer which would seem to make more sense?
As far as I can remember,…

Memory says that the leather washer goes between the steel ring which locks the upper fork bush and seal into the slider, and the spring. The lower fork shroud is fixed to the slider by three very small screws. Be sure to grease the shroud well before fitting, to prevent corrosion.
Many years ago I worked on a very original 1949 Inter belonging to my father.

I've got two of those washers with the 3 holes in, I suspect it's not the same as the one for the spring. Mine came with a pair of short roadholders, I've put those together without the washer for now, because it would Lower the shroud and possibly loosen the headlight ears.

Thanks to everyone for you…
Thanks to everyone for your replies. I went to founders day on Sunday and found some washers with the three holes and others without, so will certainly fit some at the top and bottom of the springs. Cheers

As far as I can remember, the leather washer fits to the top of the spring to stop metal to metal contact. The top shroud is held by a triple holed round plate with countersunk screws directly to the bottom of the bottom steering yoke. The washer does not usually have any holes in it.. You can buy new ones ....

You can see on the parts diagram the leather washers top and bottom (22 & 27) fit on the end of the spring. The fixing plate is part No.20 with the 3 fixing screws Part no. 21....to fix top spring cover tube No. 19.....so it is as I have said above.....Les
