Jubilee forks cable side?

Forums

Hi Jub owners,,

I've not a lot of knowledge on Jubilee front end but realise that there have been quite a few variations of slider.

Please can you look at these photos and confirm forks are from about 1962.

I believe 1962 vintage has sliders with mudguard stay hole above the slider and the spindle mounts are continuous. Earlier ones had cutouts to drop different spindle downwards.

Q.  Should these forks have the front brake cable mount on the RHS or the LHS. I suspect these have been assembled wrong?

Thanks for your help.

Hi Peter - when I was researching forks for mine I found a few pictures with the brake (& cable) on the LH side but couldn’t define if this was as original.  I suspected there “may” have been a few (possibly on the initial Plumstead ones) where it was fitted that way but then reverted to original RH side.

Doesn't really help - sorry, but fitting on RH side I wouldn’t think there would be anyone who would question it!

Hi Peter,

Your forks look OK for 1962 (with the round bottoms) - but the mudguard & stays are not original.

The stays, when they pass through the fork bottoms, act as cotter pins - so they must be in place - but loose - when you insert the spindle. Similarly, to withdraw the spindle, you must first slacken the stays. The nut on the end of the spindle is a sleeve nut, and the 'cotter pin' locks it in place too.

The forks fitted to Plumstead models after 1963 had squarer bottoms, with the fork stays coming in from the botton & acting as clamps to a conventinal spindle & Nut arrangement

Having said the above - the brake can be fitted either way round - there is a stop both sides.

Thanks for your input Bruce and Andy.

I didn't realise that the mudguard mount on the fork slider played a part in keeping the axle in place.

Accepting the brake cable on the LHS might be better than risking the fork seals being damaged on a changeover.

Peter,

Mine is on the right but interestingly it was on the left when I got it!

I had to strip the forks to replace the oil seals (not that they seem to do much) and the cable run seems better on the right.

I don't know if you have one but mine has a seperate cable mount/adjuster rather than using the one on the mudguard mount. I supect that this is because the brake cable (supplied by NOC) does not have the necessary dimensions to adjust properly when attached to  the mudguard mount. The cable adjuster can be moved and down the fork leg to achieve the desired adjustment.

Just as the dust is beginning to settle about brake on the left or right, here is a very original 1965 Jubilee that has just been repatriated from the USA - Note the much smoother silencers, and the cowhorn handlebars. AND the brake is on the left!!

It also sports the later forks, square at the bottom, with the stays under the axle acting as clamps.

For what it's worth Andy my F reg Jubilee (London registered and first sold in Tottenham so probably one of the last batch built) had the brake on the right, those silencers, chrome mudguards and headlight shell - but happily not those bars!    It also didn't have the brake drum cover plate your American import in the picture has - I thought that was only on much earlier Jubilees?   Nick
