I have recently come across an old Norton gearbox. The number and letters read as:
Gearbox casing N8002 with and E stamped above and on the gearbox cover G5 A 49.
Does anyone have an idea what year and model this gearbox was for?.

I have the box shown in the attached pix: the identification page noted in my previous comment confirms that it's a Sturmey Archer box, but any further info would be welcome.

Sturmey Archer gearbox.
Hi Julian,
Your gearbox is a 4 speed standard ratio S.Archer from circa 1932/3 and looks like it probably had the S/A 6 spring clutch and would need the engine shaft shock absorber. This 'box would have been fitted to an ES2 or CS1.

The number is N8001 E of course, not N8002 E, clumsy fingers.
