Alton alternator for singles?

Forums

Hello All,

I am fitting an Alton A/C generator to my 1958 model 19s, so far it is simple, that is until I got to the "connecting the red and black wires to a switch, and from that switch a single wire goes to the main switch in the head light shell" part. My knowledge of electrical systems is limited to "either it works or it doesn't, and if it goes really bad, smoke leaks out and the smell of melted plastic follows thereafter." any one out there in Nortonia have any suggestions? The aforementioned switch does not exist on my bike.

regards,

Albert

One Must assume that the RED and BLACK wires refer to the output from the regulator/rectifier that comes with the ALTON. IF SO then these are just the supply wires. The RED goes to earth (assuming Positive earth) and the BLACK is the supply to feed the bike/charge the battery. The best feed in point is in fact the ammeter. These have two connections and you need the one that does NOT have the battery on it. You need the one that has the headlight or ignition switch supply on it. Putting it another way, the charge and discharge go together on one side of the ammeter the battery is on its own on the other side.

Hi Al,

You assumed correctly, the red and black wires are coming from the regulator/rectifier unit. Alton does specify running the system on a negative earth rather than the time honored positive earth we all know and love. A friend has suggested kicking the bike over with a test light on one or the other of the wires in question and connecting the lit up wire to the positive side of things. What has me so anxious is that Alton supplied a set of instructions that give several different approaches to this wiring set up, and the implication I get is that the unit doesn't tolerate mistakes very well, the thought of frying this rather expensive item leaves me cold, hence my trepidation. Perhaps I should go to the source and ask them directly, I just thought that maybe some one else in the NOC had installed one of these and could share their experiences with me. Thank you for your input though, it sounds much like what Alton said to do, in fact.

Regards,

Albert
