Speedo cable routing

Forums

I've had a good day in the garage today and have almost finished the complete re wire of my jubilee, I was pleased that everything worked when I connected up the battery! I've fitted the speedo cable in the headlight shell and placed the cable loosely down the down tube, under the engine and along the swing arm to find that the bike is 1 foot too short! (It is a club cable) is it supposed to go under the tank? And where does it go from there?!

cheers

Hi Dan,

Sounds like the progress has been mighty and you will shortly be up and running.

All my Jubilees are tucked up in their Winter garage with the MGs and I'm 400 miles away from home so I can't easily check how my cables fit. From memory they fit just as you describe i.e under the engine. I don't remember where my speedo cables came from - they might be original ones - but they seem the right length.

Someone else must have used the club cables and hopefully they will enlighten us. If you fit under the tank then surely you will get a nasty sharp bend where the cable goes up into the speedo in the headlamp shell ?.

I have a new cable on my Electra from NOC which is about 4in to long and a loop sticks out of the front of the down tube at the bottom, does not look good but without a shorter cable not much you can do Bryon

Just to add, the period wasselcatalogue i have states 1959 to 60 jubilee as 5ft long and 1961 to 1963 as 5ft and 1.5inch, the romac catalogue states 59/60 as 5ft cable number AS120 and 1961 to 63 as 5ft 2inch long part number AS134.the navigator used the longer cable same as the laterjubilee.may help to check yours, Arthur.

Thanks, my jubilee has roadholders fitted so I may need the navigator cable, I'll measure the cable tomorrow and report back.

Well I've just been out to the garage (cold out there!) my speedo cable is 5'6" to the underside of the headlight so about 5'9" in total which is way too long even if I go under the tank, down the centre frame member and along the swing arm!!

Looks like that will be going back.

Two questions. I have a new/old stock cable which is 63.5" long, will this fit. One end is armoured, which end is this connected.

The armoured end is connected to the speedo drive at the rear wheel.

According to the Smiths flexible drive catalogue for 1971, the Jubilee used three different lengths for their Speedo cables. 1959-60 5ft, 1961-63 5ft 1-1/2 inches, 1964-66 5ft 2 inches

Dan, I replaced my (original I think) late Navigator speedo cable earlier this year with one from the NOC shop and it fitted perfectly.   I routed it as the original, along the swinging arm, under the engine, up the front down tube and in to the headlight shell.    That is the same as my original late Jubilee which I owned in the late 70s early 80s.    I will take some photos and post them later this pm.   Well done with the rewiring - sounds like you are almost there!

Hi Nick, the thread is a little old!  .... as I recall I went to a local shop and ordered one the right length and fitted it up, it’s been working fine, unlike the gear selectors! - see the gearbox thread.

John, hopefully yours will fit ok.

That will teach me to look at the date Dan!   Good luck with the gearbox - I found the later box easier to work on back in the day - or is that rose tinted specs?

Yep rose tinted specs ...... I think the early one is easier! But I’ll confirm when I’ve finished!
