Gearbox cover probem

Forums

Why is it that sometimes when I offer the inner gearbox cover to the box, it slips into place. Other times - like now, when I'm in a hurry(need it by Saturday) - it steadfastly refuses to move in that last 1/8"?

It's not the gearchange selector pin. That was tickled into place.

I suspect the kickstart pawl is catching on the face of the kickstart gear rather than slipping inside it. If I'm correct, how on earth do I get at it to tease into the gear?

BTW - it's a laydown box.

Any help greatly appreciated.

You could try moving the kick start gear out a little bit and engage with the kick starter, then push the outer cover home

Problem solved. Having slept on it and looked at the parts I now realise that the pawl for the kickstart is held down anyway as it is against its stop. So it wasn't that. I was assuming then that it was the layshaft not being able to slot into the kickstart shaft as the shaft was slightly dropped prior to being fitted. In case anyone else has this problem it transpired that the main shaft was the culprit. it was very slightly dropped. I removed the clutch rod, offered up the inner case, re-inserted the clutch rod and with a bit of waggling got the shaft to enter the mainshaft outer bearing. Sorted!
