I'm fitting different bits which came in boxes. To-days problem is :-
Offering the speedo cable to the speedometer the inner doesn't go far enough into the speedo (see photo) so is bound to strain the instrument when the cable nut is tightened up. Cable box marked as an Aerco 5' 7 1/2" magnetic, sounds right. Speedo is right as a Smiths SSM.3002/00A. If cable to fault how do I make sure I can get a correct one?

Hi Jonathan,
Nowt to do with the routing, picture was taken with cable flat out on the floor and no gearbox attached other end. It's as if the squared off tang that goes into the speedo is to long.

Hi John, Do not attempt to shorten the inner as it will disintegrate, What you could do is fit a spacer washer (at both ends if needed) .

It may also be possible to move the crimped on ferule on the inner to allow more entry into the speedo gearbox (if there is room).

Hi wonder if there is a snapped off piece of inner cable within the speedo head. Baz

Thanks all,
Robert - yea I guessed that would happen, perhaps a mil but not the three or four or more I need.
Barry - If the Tacho and Speedo have similar internals, the problem persists trying the cable on the Tacho
I'm not that impressed with the cable anyway, Tryingcable routs on the frame the outer came off the (gearbox end) ferrule with the smallest of tugs.
So recommendations where to get best replacements?

Last note;-
Robert Tuck gets the prize. On the chronometrics.co.uk site is a diagram showing the squared off tang bit should be 9/16" (15mm) long and mine was >17mm. By gripping the crimped on ferule I managed to tap the tang back in to the right length thus saving £15 -20.
Many thanks.
Didn't the design change?…

David,
According to thechronometrics.co.uk site chronometrics require a 7/16" tang the magnetic a 9/16" so I guess if you use a mag cable on a chrono you would get same sort of problem I was getting.
How are you routing the cable? And what model do you have? Featherbed big twin, hybrid big twin or pre-featherbed Norton big twin. I can tell you the length and routing of my cable which fits well.
