In the workshop manual (section C33 in the 1973 edition) it says
"14 Tighten the cylinder base nuts in sequence."
Unfortunately it fails to specify what the sequence is.
I assume that alternating sides and front/back (i.e. on the lines of the sequence for the cylinder head fasteners) is correct, but is it better to start in one place rather than another? (Cylinder head procedure is to start with the two between the cylinders, of course.)

All this means is, tighten each one a little and work your way round a bit at a time rather than torquing one up fully before moving onto the next.
As you say, follow the basics of the head sequence but the important bit is a little bit at a time.

The only reference I've seen is in the 850 Mk3 Workshop Manual (1975 00-4224) in section C33 where the final para states, 'Tighten the cylinder fixings in diagonal sequence working to torque settings ...'
So as Tony suggested something like this:
