I have never stripped a gearbox before and was getting on fairly well , however I am struggling to undo the mainshaft nut , my manual quotes a righthand thread can anyone confirm this please

Hi, I took the shaft out with the inner cover and clamped it between two pieces of hardwood in the vice, then used a long ring spanner. Placing a piece of metal between the chain and sprocket teeth will do damage such as bent swinging arm with the pressure applied. Been there , done it.

thank you for all your suggestions . I have managed to remove nut , and discovered due to a previous bodge the layshaft bearing has collapsed and in doing so has cracked the shell which explains the oil leak !

AMC shells have the lugs p…
AMC shells have the lugs positioned differently so would require quite a re-design of the engine plates to use.
Personally, despite the cost, I would look at a new shell from Andover Norton. Gearbox failures can be deadly.

Hi
The nuts on either end of the gearbox mainshaft are normal right hand threads. Beware the large nut securing gearbox sprocket to sleeve gear - its a left hander.
