Well at the end of the day its your money to spend. Do not let any one tell you how to spend it, But there are other nice Rare Nortons out there as well, but For my money you cannot beat a good well put together Norton once Built In Bracebridge Street The Legendary stable from 1914 to 1962 - And they built some very iconic motorcycles in this time, and a lot are still running today , so the test of all is Time! , Yours Anna J

A really nice 650SS? But if it is to be a Manxman then it has to be the proper one made by Excelsior.

Hi Roger.

I recently took a trip to Crazy Horse to take a ride on there demonstrator. It was awsome, unique and i didnt want to get off. But too be honest i get the same kick on my old Commando. Like you i was torn. Ihad serious doubts only to befollowed by a strong desire to sell the house and buy one. I read everything, which often isnt a wise thing to do. My wife kept telling to go and buy one just so i would shut up. Butas others have said already a good well mantained Classic gets more heads turning, gives you a greater sense acheivement and much the same smile factor in my book.A 961 is afantastic bike but i chose to stay with my old Commando. Sleep well.

Would you buy one if it had 'Chang Jiang' on the tank...and if so, would you be prepared to pay the same price ?

If not, then there is no place for logical argument here.

Hello Roger never have and never will advise anyone how to spend their money but I have a cafe racer and love it, it is just a good motorcycle, not super fast by half but what other bike has the best brakes, suspension, and other quality parts as standard. who else offers what ever colour you want, Dont get me wrong I have had issues over the 3 years I have had mine but I wouldnt swop for any other motorcycle no matter what age.

And what worng with the First 650 built at Bracebridge street the only thing is they so rare you have a hard time finding one too buy, but there a very good machine , even that bit better than the basic 650SS the Manxman has more style and Chrome and that bit more power too , I had to fit a 22 tooth engine Sprocket on to keep the engine carm but after 75mph she off like a rocket it just wants to pull and that just coming off the pilot jet, has for 8 inch bar there just right for me and can ride this bike and have no back pains no leg pains , so you all need to stop knocking this iconic motorcycle its in its own league , I have Had Cafe racers and Sport bikes or Croch rockets You can keep them all for me,

you cannot be have something nice too ride Without any pains after the ride out, these Norton manxman.s will go has fast has any 650 twin caferacer .yours anna j

Why there not that fast and most are only 350cc and they did not handle anything like a Norton , and there would not of been a 650SS if it was not for the Norton Manxman it came first, has a 650, Yours Anna J

Why do any of us buy a bike? It's rarely a sensible, logical choice. If you have to have a bike with Norton on the tank you have a choice of something that's at least 40 years old and as good as its last restoration (and some restorations are rather more questionable than others) or something built for today's road conditions and straight out of the showroom devoid of previous owner's bodges.

Difficult, eh?

Roger, justignore all talk about horrible blue Nortons with strange little tanks and funny silencers which were apparently the fastest bike ever built...........as if.

If you asked the question in the first place then frankly you alreadyknow the answer. It's a bit like asking if you should put your lights on as it get dark.......you know the answer.

Good luck with your new Norton.

Well said Michael!

Rarely is anything in life perfect but from over 2 years of 961 ownership it has my vote.

If it's built by a company called Norton and it's got Norton on the tank it's a Norton. If you buy a classic it'll need fettling if you buy a 961 it Will be the same but new, I made my choice 961 it was, now it's your turn to spin the coin. Safe and happy riding to you all..

Yes you just go on ignoring the history of Nortons Passed I real think why some of you are in this club, as riding historical motorcycle is what this club was founded on, and this is one motorcycle without there would of not been other machines that followed it, So I cannot be Ignored, its apart of Norton History Like it or Not,

And Not all Fast motorcycles has to have the baffles knocked out and drop handle bars racing tank and seat and painted black and sliver, you all seen to have the wrong idea of what Norton motorcycle are all about, Yours Anna J

Can you please at least get one simple fact correct. The Norton Owners Club was founded in 1959. In case you haven't noticed Miss Dixon that was atime when Norton made new motorcycles for the then current market. In one form or another Norton continued manufacturing for another 17 years or so. Your suggestion that the club was founded on "riding historical motorcycles" is thus fundamentally flawed.

Again you chastise people for having "the wrong idea of what Norton motorcycles are all about". That is IMHO both incorrect and totally patronising.

I have several Nortons and I am absolutely aware of what they are about, as are all other owners that I have met. Indeed I may even buy a new Norton to add to my collection. Perhaps you need to ease back on the criticism of other people and their bikes and do what you are very good at, and that is providing first class technical information which many people are extremely grateful to receive.

Nortons are many and varied in their size, colour and purpose and no single road model is so exceptional that all others need to be negativelymeasured against it, often unfairly.

Now there's an object lesson in tact and diplomacy!

I think that's more than enough and if Roger decides he is going to purchase a 961, I hope he lets us know his impressions of the machine. I am closing down this conversation.
