Hi folks,
what is the point of the centre stand on the early rigid framed bikes. What I mean by that is that when in the down position on my 1935 m18 it barely touches the ground and certainly cannot be trusted.
The stand is in nice condition for its age but the feet i guess have worn down over 90 years, but even so i would guess i need to build them up by around half to 3/4 of an inch to have any purpose.
could it be that the tyres depth have increased from when originally produced.
the rear stand renders the centre obsolete.
photos of them in original form seem scant.

It's useful on the flat…
It's useful on the flat floor in my garage where I can't get behind to pull it onto the rear stand.

Norton actually referred to it in their literature as "an additional prop stand". It's not a centre stand in terms of one that lifts the machine, but a short prop stand that can be used on either side depending on camber etc.
I think it's only something you might want to use to make it easier to get to the rear stand, or to unlatch the garden gate though.
The military "Field Stand" wasn't much better. I suspect that Lucas paid commission based on replacement headlamp glass sales !
