Hello
I'm still on the lookout for a 650ss barrel as the engine I have has a 99 barrel and it's not ideal (see previous forum discussions). It's on my shopping list - but prices are a bit salty at the moment.
I was idly browsing through the fantastic offerings from HJ Pugh's next auction on 5th July and there are a large number of twin barrels up for sale - I saw 15 or more for sale. Sadly they are not laid out very well so it's hard to identify them using the guide in the Service Notes.
If anyone has a moment could they cast their eyes on the photos, or even better have a look at the site as there are loads of Norton bits up for grabs.
If anyone ID's a 650ss barrel then let me know and I'll see if Pughs can taste some additional photos to confirm. I've added the photos from the auction below but there aren't many to be fair.
Hope you can help!
Cheers
Kit

Thanks Phil that maker sense…
Thanks Phil
that maker sense - most of the other Norton twins from the auction seem to relate to Commando engines but hope springs eternal and all that. Hopefully someone from the NOC will be able to use them.
Cheers

Buying rusty barrells…
Buying rusty barrells uninspected from a distance is frought with problems. They have all likely to have been discarded for good reason . They need to be very cheap as you can be just buying scrap metal.. Remind us whats the issue with the 99 ones.

99 problems?
I agree with your assessment - the whole auction seems to be full of heaps of discarded Norton engines and parts which are in that state for a reason.
As for the 99 barrel that's on the bike at the moment - only time will tell. I'm advised through this forum that there are potential issues with the skirt on the 99 barrels not being cut away as deeply as the 650ss to allow the con rod to move freely and that the pushrod tunnels are larger to allow for the heftier pushrods to be used.
So far neither of these issues have been noticed and the bike is running sweetly enough but I'm still being gentle and taking it easy. It may be that so long as I don't ask too much of her that all will be well. This is my first Norton Twin so my frame of reference is limited somewhat.

Most of the attached Pugh Auction photographs are showing 750 and 850 Commando barrels.
These have casting numbers 24237 (750) and 065850 (850) on the rear lower flange.
Atlas barrels also wear 24237 on the lower back flange.
Now the confusing bit.......pre-1963 99 and 650 engines both use barrels with a 22709 casting number. The 650 versions having cutaways in the lower skirts for the con-rods to move through.
AMC (Plumstead 1963on) made 650 and replacement 99 & 99SS barrels use a 22710 casting number. Check out the photographs below.
Points to note......Some early barrels had spigots, later barrels did not. Some barrels had their spigots remove and re-sleeved barrels gave an option.
650 barrels tend to have more finning plus a v-cut away at the front.
