My bike is fitted with an incorrect light switch for a magneto model, please see photo. I wondered if the following parts from the NOC online catalogue would be correct:
part 31784 switch, light, 3 position.
part 54330576 baseplate: switch.
I would be grateful for any advice
Firstly you need to be sure that your bike is 62 and a mag bike. Earlier SS bikes were fitted with coil ignition and in that case the psr8 switch you show may be correct!. This may all be irrelevant if you are intent on building a 62 mag bike. I make this point because my old 88DL was advertised and sold as an 88SS , which it is not.
The NOC item looks like my 1963 mag bike switch.
It's important to know the date of build /despatch.
The switch shown is a PRS8 (Lucas part no 31443) with emergency start facility and used on coil /distributor equipped 88/99 and 650 models. The SS models (88SS and 650SS models) used a 41SA switch (part no 31784) and used magneto ignition.
1963 SS and Atlas models with magneto ignition used a different switch to 1962 SS models namely the 88SA (part no 34289).
My 1961 99SS was fitted with coil ignition to complicate things.
A genuine 88SS is a rare and very desirable bike ,I would happily build a fake one myself. I would say its one of the best Nortons ever made . A very good allrounder with a race pedigree.
Many thanks for the information provided by everybody. It is a very useful service to a novice like myself. The various comments set me thinking. The bike is a genuine 88SS as confirmed by the Factory Record Certificate; however it is fitted with an incorrect cylinder head and I am going to post a topic on 'Heavy Twins' about the availability of the correct item.
Attachment is from a 1962 Norton Sales Brochure. Appears to show Headlight from an SS model.
And here is mine from 1963 which Ian (abovve) says should be a 34289
