What fork is this?

Forums

I have a set of forks but don't know what they are from. In the attached photo the one at the bottom is from my 650ss, but what is the top one from? It is the same length at the 650's but is different at the top.

Yes, I agree the slider is a long roadholder with the small threaded hole to attach the bottom chrome plated cover

Thanks! Would anyone know what bike it was from? I've been asking my, Canadian, experts and they are puzzled not having seen one like it before.

The top slider is from a long Roadholder - the difference from an early short Roadholder is the reduced diameter at its top, for the plain tubular lower fork shroud. They got a separate steel lock ring to retain the upper fork bush and seal. Short Roadholders got a one-piece lock ring and lower shroud, so the top 2 inches are not turned down. Above the lug for the roadster brake plate, these sliders have a lug for the Manx brake plate, un-machined.

At a later date, the mudguard lugs got moved downwards. Not sure when, but may have been at the same time as the wider fork yokes came out, circa 1960. The slider in the lower pic is this later, probably '60s slider. It doesn't have the lug for the Manx brake plate.

There are other variations - if you look in the 1950 Parts Book, the very first long Roadholder had upper mudguard bolts one-above-the-other, and the garden-gate Manx retained this slider to use up stocks after the roadsters stopped using it.

If you get exceptionally lucky, you may find a left side slider with a Manx brake plate lug. It was for the 1963-only 7" double sided 4ls Manx hub. Of course, there are also sliders for the Commando with disc caliper mounts, and are generally shaped differently.

Like what Dan? Your link took me to a thread but no attachments although the replies suggested there was or might have been....

You should be able to the picture in the thread, but if you can't here's a better pic of my long roadholders as fitted to a 55 ES2

Ah yes, now I see the photos! I was likely posting from work, they block a lot of things.

I don't want them. Make me an offer! But remember, I'm in Canada.
