A tale of two Jubilees

Last weekend I made a 1300 km roundtrip together with a friend to buy two Norton Jubillees near Cologne, Germany. One is a 1959 Jubilee Deluxe, the other one a later (1964?) Standard.

Both bikes were partially dismantled since about 30 years. The red standard looks like in original (faded on the tank ) burgundy red and black with only 1675 miles on it, if the odometer tells the truth. The cylinders and heads were taken off because a broken head stud.

The early deluxe looks like beeing repainted there are welded repair spots inside the rear faring.

The lifting handle is missing.

The engine is in pieces but it belongs to the bike.

Looking over the parts and bikes the first questions arise:

Were to get the small wipac pips for the early smaller headlamp?

One is broken off. Those extension were  obviously made for indicators. The original mountings for the headlamp are missing, I guess there are captive nuts in the shell similar to the lamp housing on my Navigator.

Funny thing is in Germany you only need indicators for bikes built after 1961!

I also found this piece of some kind of cardbord, looks like it was mounted somehow under the rear fairing as a dirt protection. Factory or homemade?

On to the rear light!

The infamous Wipac Sabrina taillight is mounted. I dismantled it and found an ingenious fix for a broken off contact.

The brake light bulb was wrapped in finest leather as an insulation and the wire was stuck between the bulb and the leather!

Can someone please send me a pic of the original contact? I know there are replicas but i would like to repair and save the original piece.

The following parts are definitely missing:

chainguard for the standard Jubilee, both brake pedal stops, one set of coils with brackets.

Lifting handle for the deluxe model and both pairs of silencers.

The Hardboard  is I think the spray baffle  to close the gaps  that the internal guard and rear enclosure  allow  the water to get everywhere. Never seen one in place as they disintegrate .  Make something better in plastic or rubber sheet. That seat and cover is orriginal and currently  not availiable anywhere.  Grab handle is  in stock somewhere.

Did a bit of research today:

The Deluxe is bike No. 340 built in May 1959 in the second batch according to the stamped number on the right hand engine case above the gearbox.

The Standard has frame No. 117811 so it is one of the last 14 bikes built in May/June 1966.

The last Jubilee is No.117825!

Both infos are from the NOC Lightweight compendium.

I overlooked the parts especially for the Deluxe because the engine is in pieces.

An order for parts to the NOC shop is sent. Some studs, bolts and washers were missing,

also the lifting handle and rear number plate.

The crankshaft is still on original diameter and the journals look good so I ordered onyl a set of new shells.

Meanwhile I took some main bearings from my stock  to a local machine shop.

They were grinded to suit the larger radius on the Jubilee crankshaft.

The one in the middle has the standard radius for comparison.

The early headlamp causes some trouble. The reflector and glass unit comes obviously from an Italian bike. The headlamp rim does not fit onto the shell because of that flange.

I bought a Lucas 5 3/4 rim and a matching reflector but the rim is too large.

I think Joseph Lucas measures the 5 3/4 rims differently!

So I am looking for an original WIPAC rim . Or what do you guys ues as a replacement?

I also removed the smal WIPAC pips from the shell. One is already broken. Maybe I can replicate

them by making a mould an cast some clear resin in it.

Great work. 

These bikes are extremely rare in Australia. 

I would think the little Wipac pips would be a perfect candidate for 3D printing.

The early Jubilee deluxe is running. I converted her two 12 volts with a modern power box and a Boyer ignition.

Of course the bike is leaking oil . It comes from the oil inlet under the engine. I will have to loosen the engine and lift it up because the right frame rail is blocking the screw which holds the inlet in place.

A friend gave me the used silencers which were missing. I left her in the mostly original pint. I guess the rear fairing and tank were repainted becasue the headlamp and forks show a darker blue.

So on to the late Jubilee standard. The bike came with cylinders and heads removed because of a broken head stud. Engine was full of old oil. I need to clean the crankcase from the residues.The odometer shows some 1450 miles which could be correct according to the state of the bike. Shiny wheel rims and not much wear and tear all around.

I took of the oil tank and it looked like this after some 30 years of standing: Yummi!

I would like to keep the bike as original as possible.

Someone in the past made some seriuos sticker tuning. The DUNSTALL "tuning" doubles the value of the bike! :)

Some progress on the late Jubilee:

I laid the bike on the side onto a  foam pad to get better access to the sump plate. I flushed the crankcaes with petrol because it wetsumped for 30 years and the crankcase was full of old oil.

I also cleaned the underside from road grime and oil. The rubber stop for the mainstand was gone so I cut a piece of rubber hose and fitted it to the main stand stop. Inside the C-channel I found the original hardbord spray baffle and finally I know how it is ment to be fitted inside the channel.

I copied the from onto a piece of cardboard for my other Lightweights.

I have to change my self made spray baffles on my other Jubilee and my Navigator.

Here it is seen from underneath the bike.

Then disaster struck. I broke one of the oil retainig rings for the standard size pistons while fitting them.

I know replacements are available thrrough NOC Shop but I will have a look around locally.
