Hi all,
Being working in the front fork, I?m a bit confused about the position of the oil seal between the bronze bush and the round nut which hold it.
Ia all manuals I have, the pictures show the oil seal with the flat or closed side upwards, what means that the sharp edge goes against the paper washer, which seems not to be reasonable.
Other manuals speaks about a spring -located at the opposite of the flat side- fitted uppermost?
Finally, in other text, it speaks that the radiused edge faces upwards?
Common sense, is that the flat side should be fitted against the paper washer, that is, downwards. It is correct?
Help of anyone will be very grateful,

Mine has the flat side upp…
Mine has the flat side uppermost, i was always taught the the spring side of the oil seal points towards the oil.

Les, yes we're going up there today, it used to almost be walking distance from my house but they've moved it to Smeatharpe and now 7 miles away! Club member Chris Sheppard usually goes too last year his ES2 was on display.
I thought about taking one of mine up, but we have family staying and I didn't want to leave it up there unattended.

Hello Hans... the Correct way is to have the closed side of the seal upwards. In this way the spring in the seal is on the bottom side and will resist oil being pushed up from the slider when it is compressed. Using your photo as a guide, the correct way is the seal on the RIGHT HAND side...looking downwards at the top of the slider.
Quite often there is no paper washer....the seal is created by the circumferential fit of the oil seal in the fork slider...you may wish to coat the outside of the seal with "Wellseal" jointing compound to prevent leakage past the edges of the seal if the inner surface is rough, but usually this is not necessary.
So you are NOT correct in your assumption....the FLAT side is uppermost.
