Wassel ammeter

Forums

Is everyone's 12 amp Wassel ammeter as odd as mine? This is the second new one I've  had, the first one was completely broken when I took it out of the box and this one looks like its going to fall to pieces as soon as I go over the fist bump.

Should I have put the rubber gasket inside the headlamp shell? It sits so proud as it is.

Why it shows a charge of 2 amps is a bit disconcerting too. Its not been energised yet, perhaps it will sort itself out??

Attached are a few photos. Even Lucas parts were better!

... is generally pretty poor quality and always has been - I remember they had a shop near the Birmingham City football ground back in the 1970s. With ammeters, they often stick a little bit and the vibration of the engine usually zeros them.

It does seem that way. The good news is its easy to swap out an ammeter, it could be a lot worse. I don't know which make to choose when that time comes though. Lucas don't seem to have a much better track record these days.

Lucas as a company demised in the 80s what you  buy in a 'green box' is made under licence by Wassell in the far east.

Really? It just goes from bad to worse. In this whole rebuild the only other new bit I've had problems with is the Lucas three phase alternator. Really really poorly made. I've yet to see if it works!

... any resemblance between parts currently labelled Lucas and those emanating from Graet Hampton Street is purely coincidental.

I have fitted a Wassell 3 phase alternator to my Mk 3 Commando and its great certainly improves the charging,at 30 mph with head lights on and heated grips  the volt meter is showing 13 volts, try matching that with the original alternator.Cheers Paul Wolf
