Electra gearbox kickstart and gear lever oil seals

Forums

Hi all, I need to replace the kickstart and gear lever shaft oil seals on my Electra. I’ve bought the square section ones, I’m thinking to fit them the bushes will have to be removed. Can anyone suggest the best method of removal without damaging the bush.

Cheers, Stew

Stew,

I don't know why your bushes need to be removed. I fitted the seals without removing anything other than the old seals.

Stew,

Are we talking about the same things here. I've just replaced the two O rings on my selector shaft without any fuss. Having removed the outer casing along with the shaft and selector gear etc, the bushes (I only had one hence the oil leak) were easily removed and the new ones fitted using a fine terminal screwdriver.

While I'm here, on this topic, having fitted the new O rings and built up the outer casing, I no longer have any self return travel on the gear selector pedal. If I slightly undo the lower right and bottom screws, the selector springs back to centre. It made selection a hit and miss affair and I can only think that having new O rings and maybe a warped selector shaft ?

Thanks for the replies, managed to hook out the old ones and replace without too much fiddling.

Stew,

I wonder if you oiled or greased the new seals before assembly and you've got too much friction without it.
