Hello
Does anybody know why the ammeter on my 1951 ES2 shows full charge when I connect the battery but the engine is not running. I put a 25 amp fuse in the earth wire from the CVC but this blows when I turn the lights on, should I remove the fuse and go direct to earth,or will this damage anything. It is a 6 volt system with mag-dyno. Any advice appreciated.
Cheers

Sounds like your battery is…

6 volt
Thanks Robert
Battery is connected +ve earth. It has a Wassell 6 volt +ve regulator and the paperwork shows the black wire connected to the -ve terminal on the battery with an in line fuse but the wiring diagram in the Mercian manual shows the black wire to earth which would be the +ve terminal. I'm confused.
Cheers
Pete

Perhaps the ampmeter…
Perhaps the ampmeter connections are wrong? , for sure the only readings you can get with the engine not running are a discharge. Sounds like you need to start from scratch.

And I wouldn't...
... rely on the wire colours......
What is a Mercian manual? Remember that a 1951 ES2 should be negative earth.

IF...initially
If the battery was charged in reverse then the above could be the result. Check that the battery Positive and Negative are thus. Ignore the direction of the ammeter initially-certainly there should NOT be any amps flowing or fuses blowing when at rest. Disconnect the electronic regulator and check the lights work, and horn and stop light, ie no heavy discharge. At this point if there is still a discharges and fuse blowing then there is a short in the wiring some where.

Have you trapped a wire…
Have you trapped a wire somewhere? To test it, take out the fuse and put a bulb in instead. It's a lot cheaper than blowing fuses.

Sounds like your battery is connected the wrong way round and you have a dead short on the lights wiring somewhere. Connecting up without a fuse will set fire to the bike.
