Commander Batteries

Hi all

New to rotary bike having just sold my immaculate home built Triton that is on ebay for sale £19,999.00.  I decided i needed a challange so i bought a Commander on ebay at right money. What is the battery number do i need? I intend buying Motobatt batteries as i have them on my other classics and they're a good battery - lots of power.

I want to get these on order so i have them when bike comes although i wont be starting it till ive done the pre starting sequence -  ive been told by mechanic

Regards - Trev

The Commander came with 2 x14amp/hr batteries, eg YB14. Two batteries were installed to give sufficient power for all of the police equipment. Some owners have reduced it to one battery without any problems. There is no reciprical motion so the engine spins freely but starting does require a fast spin.

I use just one Exide YB14L-A2, fitted on the right hand side I removed the redundant positive lead and retained the negative lead connecting it to one of the allen bolts that hold the left hand carb to the frame.

The vacant space where the left hand battery used to fit now holds a useful 1 litre container of oil.

I have had the same battery for a few years now and do not have any starting issues or lack of power.

thx anthony i have bought 2 new gel batteries as bike has not been started for a few years upon advice ihave filled cylinders and am turning over manually so im tols will need a lot of turning over to get going

regards trev

The twin batteries on my Commander lasted seven years. There is no real reason to to reduce to one.Like Tim said not much compression but when hot the engine likes a good old spin. Why compromise.

I fitted 2 gel batteries and they stay charged for many many months without use and  before i start the bike after a winter lay off i remove the right panel and turn the fuel tap between on & res and you will find that the carbs will fill with fuel without waiting for the vacum to turn the tap on and mine starts first time.Cheers Paul
