Rear wheel offset

Forums

Hi from the colonies,

I’ve just replaced the old rear rim on my ‘71, going from WM2/19 to WM3/18. I’ve got it laced properly, BUT, Bacon lists the original offset at 3/16”(4.8mm), and he says the dimension will be altered by1/2 the difference in width of the rear rims. The WM3 measures 8mm wider than the WM2, suggesting an offset change of 4mm. If that at all makes sense, the offset for the WM3should be barely 1mm. Am I on track, or has isolation and Covid scrambled my brain?

Hello Ernie,

RGM suggest 1/4" (6mm) offset from offside for a WM2 rim on their tech tips webpage, otherwise your calculations make sense to me. Anyone else got a measurement?

Whatever the offset is, it is where the centreline of the rim is that matters, as you say, if the rim is 8mm wider, the edge will be 4mm further out either side, but the actual offset of the rim must remain the same, i.e the centreline must be in the same place.
